Many are turning away from traditional Western medicine in search of natural alternatives. This is completely understandable, as the high cost, risky side effects, and ineffectiveness of many migraine medications are enough to frustrate anyone. However, there is a lot of migraine information in the realm of natural treatments, and not all of it is accurate. Pursuing natural remedies is generally safer than the traditional approach, but you do not want to waste more time with trial and error. Fortunately, there are plenty of natural treatments which are effective in migraine relief. As with the traditional approach, natural treatments for migraines mostly focus on the prevention of migraines. However, natural remedies try to relieve all aspects of the migraine, not just mask symptoms.

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat physical ailments, and medical research has proven that it is effective for at least 30 conditions, including migraines. Some migraine sufferers who have tried acupuncture have claimed to experience relief for months afterwards. Studies have shown those who receive acupuncture treatments visit doctors and take medication less frequently, and have less time missed from work. However, acupuncture is not for everyone.

A lot of migraine information praises various herbs for their ability to treat migraines. Though certain herbs may work for certain people, the majority of claims about herbs have no scientific basis. This does not mean the claims are not true, but it is best to be wary of the less researched herbs. However, two herbs- butterbur and feverfew- may truly work. Taking standardized versions of one of these herbs daily may help to prevent migraines. Initial studies have revealed that as many as two-thirds of those who took butterbur had a significant reduction in migraine occurrence.

There is a wealth of migraine information which is available to you, and even doctors are beginning to understand that natural treatments do work. Sifting through all the information can be time-consuming and frustrating.
