Propanolol is a beta-blocker medicine used mainly for the treatment of hypertension and is one of the most commonly prescribed medications for the treatment of migraines.
Propanolol hormone migraine treatment is counter indicated for people who suffer from diabetes, hyperthyroidism, Raynaud’s syndrome, bradycardia, severe hypotension or cocaine toxicity. The main encountered side effects can be dizziness, the appearance of skin rashes, skin peeling, wheezing, welling, weight gain, chest pain, cold extremities, bradycardia, sexual dysfunctions, low blood sugar and irregular heartbeat.
Usually, Propanolol hormone migraine treatment is prescribed at first in small doses (maximum 30 milligrams distributed twice or three times a day) and it is increased as time passes by. The average dose is 10-40 mg, three or four times per day.
“Hormone migraine” is the generic term used to describe the pain caused by the premenstrual syndrome, menopause, the ache during the first three months of pregnancy and during the menstrual cycle of a woman. Hormone migraines are associated to the women’s reproductive cycle and to the effects of estrogen.
Usually, this soreness is only felt on one side of the head and it can last from a few hours up to several days. The intensity ranges from a mild to severe pain, which may require special attention. For migraine treatment, the indicated dosage is 80 mg of Propanolol each day, as an initial dose.
Thereafter, the usual dose is between 160 mg and 240 mg daily. The use of this drug has been demonstrated benefic since it eases the blood vessels swelling due to the serotonin production. These medications should be taken two or even three days prior to the menses and continuously throughout the menstrual flow.
As with other types of migraines, the pain can become more intense when the subject is exposed to bright light, a high level of noise or stress.
