One of the most common treatments for migraine is triptan, an abortive medication from a family of tryptamine-based drugs. It is effective for treating migraines, but also cluster headaches. This medication does not prevent or cure migraine, but it lessens the symptoms felt by an individual suffering from a migraine attack. These drugs bind to serotonin receptors in the brain, making them constrict. They also inhibit the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides. They reduce migraine symptoms, and eventually relief the pain.

Triptans were first introduced as a migraine treatment in the 1990s although its discovery dates back to 1972. The most popular Triptan pills are sumatriptan (Imitrex, Imigran, Illument), rizatriptan (Maxalt), naratriptan (Amerge), zolmitriptan (Zomig), eletriptan (Relpax), almotriptan (Axert, Almogran), frovatriptan (Frova, Migard) and avitriptan.

There are contraindications to triptan. People suffering from hypertension, a family history of coronary artery diseases, history of stroke, diabetes and high cholesterol levels, cannot use this medication. Be cautious when taking these meds. It is important to talk to your doctor first.

Examples of non-triptan medications are acetaminophen, aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and a combination of aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine called Excedrin. These drugs have no triptan components in them, but are effective in treating migraine as well.

A study was conducted on triptan vs. non-triptan migraine treatment which was published by the American Headache Society. The title of the study is Migraine Treatment with Rizatriptan and Non-Triptan Usual Care Medications: A Pharmacy-Based Study. The study involved patients with migraine between 18 to 55 years old, who were prescribed with rizatriptan, and patients who were receiving other medications. They were asked to answer a questionnaire during the beginning of the study, and were asked to keep a treatment diary where they recorded their experiences towards the medications.

The triptan vs. non-triptan migraine treatment study, revealed that rizatriptan is more effective than the other medications in relieving the symptoms of migraine.
